Application of irregular shelterwood systems as an approach to achieve multi-species management

Reintroducing a video presentation by Patricia Raymond, ing.f., Ph. D., Research Forester, Ministry of Natural Resources and Forests of Quebec at the Northern Hardwood Conference, August 2023 – Application of irregular shelterwood systems as an approach to achieve multi-species management

In a thought-provoking video presentation, Patricia Raymond explains irregular shelterwood systems (ISS) and how innovative silvicultural approaches offer promising alternatives to traditional clearcutting and regular shelterwood cutting.

Raymond’s presentation also highlights results from an experiment conducted in an irregular spruce-fir-yellow birch forest in Québec. Inspired by natural dynamics driven by the spruce budworm, this study evaluates the effectiveness of irregular shelterwood scenarios (extended and continuous cover ISS). The goal? To strike a balance between ecological processes, aesthetics, and social acceptability.

Whether you’re a forestry enthusiast, a conservationist, or simply curious about sustainable forest management, this video sheds light on the future of our woodlands. Watch the full presentation here.
