HQHP - Soil rating scheme for high-quality hardwood potential

Mapping High-Potential Soils for Sugar Maple in New Brunswick
This article is adapted from NHRI’s latest technical note, “A Soil Rating Scheme for Sugar Maple in New Brunswick.”

Sugar maple is an economically and culturally important species in New Brunswick’s hardwood forests—valued for its ecological role, cultural presence, and high-quality wood products. Climate change, declining tree quality, and competitive regeneration dynamics are increasing the need for improved tools to support sustainable hardwood management.

To support this goal, NHRI and UNB researchers have developed a new soil rating scheme and geospatial map to visualize and assess soil suitability for sugar maple across the province. This initiative builds on past research and leverages existing soil classification data to help identify areas with the highest potential for high-quality sugar maple growth.
