Flat Top Spacing Trial

Long Term Research Project assessing the effect of Thinning on Hardwood Trees in New Brunswick.  A report by Levi Shaw, UNB MS intern

The Northern Hardwoods Research Institute (NHRI) and the University of New Brunswick (UNB), in collaboration with the Canadian Wood Fibre Centre of the Canadian Forest Service (CFS), are excited to enter a new phase of the Flat Top Spacing Trial, a unique long-term study on the impact of thinning on hardwood growth and yield in New Brunswick.

Originally established by CFS in 1979, this project aims to tackle today’s forestry challenges by exploring how early stand density management affects tree growth, structure, and quality over time. With remote sensing technology and future climate scenarios in mind, we’ll also assess regeneration and carbon stocks, contributing critical insights for more productive and resilient forests.

This research will play a key role in promoting the growth of sugar maple, yellow birch, and other valuable species, supporting both industry and environmental goals in the Maritimes.
