Exploring Silviculture with Expert Insights

Bob Seymour, a seasoned voice in the circle of forestry and silviculture, has been actively curating a wealth of educational content on his YouTube channel. With a playlist titled “Silviculture Webinars,” Bob Seymour’s channel offers a comprehensive resource for those interested in the management and stewardship of woodland areas.

Currently, the channel has a collection of 114 videos, predominantly focusing on various silvicultural topics. Bob Seymour’s expertise extends beyond online education; he also pens a monthly column in the Maine Woodlands newsletter, catering to Maine Woodland Owners. Recently, he authored a comprehensive seven-part series delving into the management of American beech, aiming to provide a definitive guide on effective practices and strategies.

The adoption of the Irregular Shelterwood System (IRSW) across one million hectares of Crown Lands in Nova Scotia in 2022 stands out as an achievement that Bob is very proud of. This development was a direct outcome of involvement with the Lahey Commission from 2018 onwards, followed by collaboration with the Province to overhaul the Silviculture Guide, now known as the SGEM (Silvicultural Guide to the Ecological Matrix). The SGEM, available online, organizes decision-making using Nova Scotia’s forest community classifications, with key considerations including the composition of long-lived tolerant species and wind risk.

In his pursuit of advancing silviculture knowledge, Bob Seymour has contributed significantly to forthcoming publications. His work includes the development of a new stocking guide and density management diagram, set to debut on the University of Maine Center for Research on Sustainable Forests (UMaine CSRF) website. This publication forms part of the Silviculture Manual for Acadian Spruce-fir Forests project.

Bob Seymour remains active in retirement, engaging in research and woodland management across central Maine, overseeing properties totaling over 600 acres. Notably, he invites enthusiasts to experience the award-winning Wicopy Woods, named Maine’s 2020 Outstanding Tree Farm. Bob Seymour’s commitment to knowledge sharing extends beyond publications; he actively promotes engagement through tours and collaborative projects, such as the recent talk on “Carbon Silviculture.”

For those keen on exploring the intricate world of silviculture and forestry, Bob Seymour’s contributions offer valuable insights and practical guidance.
